I have been a Vegetarian for like 2 years now, but i don’t think have really been eating that healthy. I do exercise(i ride horses everyday!). I am kind of a picky eater(i don’t like spicy foods, or a lot of different kinds vegetables, but I do love brocolli(fav food) ) I am overweight I am 5′3" and like 170. I’d really like to find a way to shed pounds while staying a veggie. Most of the diets involve meat and aren’t veggie friendly. So does anyone have any weight loss diets that are vegitarian. Also any recipes and tips would be very helpful.
I do eat a lot of pasta.
I don’t wanna come off mean but anyone who thinks horseback riding is easy is wrong. you try riding no stirrups for an hour 3 times a week, then try and tell me it is easy. Also hauling hay and manure is hard work too.
1) Cut out the sugar (cookies, cakes, ice cream, any sweets, and fruits — for a couple of weeks, anyway)
2) Cut way down on fats (butter, oil, etc.)
3) Cut down on carbs/starches (eat only whole-grain — and a small portion!) (Note: bananas have a lot of carbs! Strawberries and other berries don’t!)
4) It wasn’t clear whether or not you eat eggs and dairy.
If you eat dairy, cut down on cheese (and only eat low-fat), have low-fat milk, stop eating ice cream (or only do it once a month).
If you eat eggs, don’t eat the yolks.
5) If you cook, don’t cook with butter (instead use a little olive oil). Best cooking method is steaming.
6) If you have trouble with portion control, eat a big salad at every meal before eating. And make your own salad dressing! Many have added sugars. (Oil & vinegar is best/simplest. Or just a spritz of good balsamic vinegar — I like the one from Costco that’s about $20, but super yummy).
7) Fill up on fiber! (That comes from salad.) Then you’ll feel full.
Use herbs and sauces (watch out for sugars — read the labels!) to enhance veggies. Just because you don’t like spicy doesn’t mean you don’t get to have different flavors. (Try jarred sauces, reading the labels for added sugars to avoid. Trader Joe’s has a variety of "simmer sauces" that you can cook food in that adds wonderful flavor — like the garam masala, which is not spicy.)
9) Don’t forget to take your vitamins! Make sure you get enough protein.
10) Applying what you like to different dishes can improve the variety of your diet. For example, cooking in an "Italian style", you could heat 1 TBS. olive oil in a skillet, add chopped garlic, add a chopped favorite veggie, stir a few minutes, and if it’s not cooked enough for you, add wine/water/veggie broth and cover for a few minutes to steam. Or you could add tomatoes and herbs like basil and finish the cooking that way.
If you like tomato sauce, what you can do is make a tomato sauce (olive oil, garlic, a bit of onion, ground tomatoes), then add fresh veggies (chopped) as you like.
11) A last bit of advice: be adventurous! Eat something new every week. Who knows, you may discover a different veggie that will be a wonderful alternative to broccoli!
Good luck!

i was reading an article from January 2003. – the american dietary situation (newsweek article).
this question popped up in my head
sorry about the way i wrote the questions. =]
Money also plays a big part. I’m a university student and I have even gone a month without buying groceries. I just put together what I had left in the cupboard: instant rice and Diana sauce (surprisingly good lol).
December 31st, 2009 -- Posted in diet stroke |
Well my father he Is going to be 60 in a couple months. His father died of a stroke in his sleep.
Like any guy he don’t like going to doctors and he don’t excersice. Besides me trying to convince him to go to see a doc and walking more what else can I do for him? I’m guessing food is another thing? I’m willing to change my diet cause what he eats I eat.
And if something does happen what should I do? Cpr on him? Or what?
Risk factors for developing a stroke are hypertension, diabetes, smoking, alcohol abuse and some other conditions.
Eating low fat, low sodium foods can keep blood pressure in a healthy range. Avoid smoking and excess alcohol use. Exercise regularly.
If signs of stroke occur you need to call 911 immediately. There are treatments that can be quite effective however they need to be administered within several hours of the stroke occuring so getting to the hospital ASAP is very important.
December 31st, 2009 -- Posted in diet for rheumatoid arthritis |
I have had a spastic colon for more than 8 years. I know what to eat and what not to even touch. My situation was controlled for some time but two months ago I woke up with a burning pain in and around my shoulder – almost inside my cartilage. I took blood tests for rheumatoid arthritis and the amount of acids in my system. Both were higher than normal but not really a danger. I am taking anti-inflammatory tablets but the pains have spread to my muscles. I am eating a balanced diet suggested by a dietician. I also exercise 5 days a week for an hour at a time but I am still gaining weight. I gained almost 15kg in 9 months. I am always bloated and suffer of heavy constipation, dizziness and fatigue. What is going on with me? Who should I see next? I have been to so many doctors and they keep on telling me it is my spastic colon! Could it be my thyroid? Please, any advice.
I hope that you are going to doctors that have enough sense to test you for everything they think it could be. Find a doctor that you trust, tell him/her everything, and they will take care of you.

I know my daily calorie requirements and BMI etc..but, I want to know how many calories I should burn daily out of my 1200 calories per day, to lose 20 pounds the healthy way.
I know the philospophy kjs in kjs out but, still find myself confused. Is it around 300 cal?
I am following a low GI diet (I am not diabetic).
Whenever you are trying to lose weight, you should concentrate on these three things which all work together in providing a healthier and quicker weight loss goal for yourself. I have found this combination really successful in my weight loss plans. The first thing is exercising and how much you can put forth into it. The more you exercise, the more results you will see. The next thing is dieting and the calorie intake. If you exercise more, technically you could eat more? Always watch what you eat.
Now the last step in a good weight loss plan is always a good diet pill that can help you get to the end of the road. I have found Proactol which is a natural herbal diet pill to be the best around. It’s an appetite suppressant along with being a fat blocker which stops up to 28% of fat you eat. Read up about it at TheWeightLossPlace .com where I saved money on it. Proactol really works well with exercising which gives you plenty of energy to perform. Along with that your diet will be affected by Proactol due to the appetite suppressant and fat blocker. If you slip up on meals, the fat blocker kicks in. It’s really great to stop food cravings.
Concentrate on those three things and the combination is deadly for the fat cells in your body. Good luck and I hope this helps.
December 31st, 2009 -- Posted in cooking healthy for kids |
I feel very saddened that so many teenagers are trying to lose weight by really unhealthy methods… is no one teaching youngsters about healthy eating? Don’t they teach nutrition in school any more? Do kids not do home economics or cookery? Why are so many teenagers over weight in the first place, then resorting to dangers ways of slimming down? Do parents not cook healthy meals or help their kids make healthy choices?
well as a 17 year old male, ive lost nearly 4 stone since i was 16, i’m now nearing my ideal weight for my height (5 foot 11).
the reason i decided to lose weight is because i was heavily overweight and very unfit, i wanted to look better and feel better, i’m now much happier.
i lost weight by eating healthily, 3 meals a day and only snacking on fruit whilst 90% of what i drank was bottled water, i’d also do a minimum of 40 minutes excercise a day 4 times a week, in school holidays i’d do 1 hour and 20 minutes.
that was extremely hard to do , but worth it i still have a small amount to lose but as i now go 2 the gym 4 times a week so losing that small bit and toning up shouldn’t be too difficult.
the reasons i was overweight are my parents were so i was given the same food they ate which was bad food and large portions of it, my metabolism was very poor i knew people that ate just as bad as me but didn’t put any weight on, i did no excercise.
i think parents cook less healthy meals because the world today is obsessed by money, and the more money the more working hours, with little time they go for the quick and easy options. people need to realise that wether we are billionaires or have very little money we all die the same and life is for living not for earning money and wishing you’d done something.
alot of teenagers that are overweight simply lack any willpower, they don’t want to put in the effort and determination (and its very hard work excercising especially as your unfit) but if you don’t keep at it you’ll never get slimmer or fitter.
most just want a quick fix like a diet pill that does the work for them.
December 31st, 2009 -- Posted in congestive heart failure diet |
I am 31, and i have congestive heart failure (born with heart problems). But within the last year i have noticed that alot of my hair has been falling out and all the sudden my I am finding strands of hair that are white and in 6 months i have lost about 10 lbs….(not trying to diet). The front part of my hair line is really thinning out. Its hard for me to figure this out…. but the summer of 2005 i had pneunioma, summer 2006 i fell into congestive heart failure and my doctor changed my medication from ternornmin, to coreg, avapro, and HCTZ (my heart is getting better on the new meds). I’m hoping this is because of the medication, but again i have not been to the OBG in a couple of years. So I am afraid it could be ovarian cancer or something……has anyone ever had lower back pain, hair thining out an turning white, and weightloss???? Any clue as to what this might be???? i would appreacite any advise here….
ACTUALLY…
sounds like your thyroid may be off. I would go get your TSH and thyroid hormone levels checked, because that’s where my money is; I bet you are hyperthyroid, and with a heart problem, that can be a big issue if you don’t get it treated.
You should go see your doc ASAP, because one of the side effects of hyperthyroidism is increased metabolic rate, which could do bad things to your heart.
Good luck, hope that helps (it is just one of many possibilities — someone with your past medical history knows you should be seeing a doctor anyway, right?),

I’ve grown increasingly attracted to living a healthy lifestyle the older I get. I am 32 and in better shape than most 18 year olds!. I am 6′1" 177lbs with 14 percent body fat. Anyway, a lot of my friends think I’m a nerd because I quit smoking and I onlly drink once every couple of weeks at MOST. Also, I exercise regularly and eat right. Does all this make me a nerd?
No. It means that a lot of your friends are losers. Time to start looking for new ones who respect themselves more, and you.
Good luck!

I’m a female teen and my parents serve healthy foods for dinner and I eat a small portion. Lunch and breakfast, on the other hand, is up to me. Do you have any suggestions for what I should be eating for breakfast and lunch and in between? Basically from 7am to 6pm (we have dinner later on). Thx!

Hi! I know that Atkins is HARD for vegetarians, and some people say it’s BAD for you in general. I want to do a little jump start to losing these 10 pounds asap! I want to lose maybe 5 by January 8 for my birthday, if not more! How would I do this Atkins 5 day jump start? What would I eat as a vegetarian. And what can I not eat??? Are raw veggies ok for a snack or are they too high in carbs?
Thanks everyone!
Low carbing for a week is a great way to jump start weight loss. It helps bring your appetite down. It’s only for a short period of time, so it really should not put your health in danger.
Eggs, cheese, tofu, nuts, natural unsweetened peanut butter will be important. Soy-based veggie burgers like Boca are also low carb. Check the label and deduct the fiber grams from the total carb grams (fiber doesn’t count toward your carb limit).
In general, green veggies are low carb. String beans, broccoli, anything leafy, zucchini, etc. Low carb veggies come in other colors as well, but that’s a long list!
Avoid most root veggies, beans (other than string beans) and all fruit and grains. You can add back whole grains later during your diet.
When you snack, eat some protein with or without veggies. Don’t snack on just veggies alone. A handfull of nuts, a hard boiled egg, a piece of string cheese, etc. If buying flavored tofu products, check the carb count on the label. Tofu itself should be fine, but some of the pre-cooked types are flavored with sugar.
