Help solve the mystery: Rheumatoid Arthritis…Lupus? What’s wrong with my poor body??

Ok. I know a little bit about both of these things and I’m a healthcare student myself so i really need additional opinions not just the basics (symptoms etc)

20 yr old active female w/ good diet and relative health

PAST: When i was 7 I had Scarlet Fever, I also had strep and bronchitis a few times as a kid. Mononucleosis in high school and what they thought was bacterial meningitis.

PRESENT: I went to the doctor last week because i have pain in my fingers and really obvious swelling, and knots near some of my knucles. He tested me for Rheumatoid and my test came back 1.3 above the scale of normal so "borderline" for rheumatoid arthritis

Recurrent symptoms (2 years):
-migraines
-weight loss (super skinny)
-cyclic nausea
-shakiness & lightheadedness
-fluttery or pounding heart
-spot dark rashes
-random fevers
-non-injury related aches

-red blood cell & hemoglobin: very low
-pulmonary function test: showed obstruction (put on Xopenex)
-blood sugar: 73

Lupus and RA can occur in overlap. It is common to have more than one autoimmune condition. Your symptoms could be any one of a number of autoimmunes. I would consider a second opinion from a rheumatologist.

I’ll tell you since being diagnosed with Lupus in July, my I have constant body aches and arthritis in my fingers, hands and toes, and I am 26 years old. I did not loose weight, but when I was super-sick at first my appetite really decreased. Fevers and migraines can also be a symptom of Lupus. I have never had rashes, but from what I’ve read they are limited to the face.

I have lupus and I experience almost all of your reoccurring symptoms (and then some!), only my weight fluctuates and my nausea is chronic. I’m also anemic (low hemoglobin count). I wouldn’t be surprised if you have lupus. Can’t say either way about RA, though….I don’t know enough about it.

I hope it’s not lupus or anything else serious! Good luck!
