I’m concerned of the balance. Not enough salt could lead to heat stroke or other complications related to long distance workouts, however, too much salt consumed leads to the risk of heart disease, higher risk of stroke, and other diseases. Can someone recommend what the balance should be? is the normal reccomended amount of sodium in a 2,000 calorie diet enough? or should more salt be incorporated in a "runner’s diet"? I am training for the New York Marathon and have concerns about high blood pressure should I consume too much sodium in my diet.
About 2400 mg a day. You don’t need more than the daily allowance for adult males, but I wouldn’t worry about it much. Very, very few Americans suffer from a sodium deficiency…in fact, many consume 2-3 times that much daily. If you’re eating a healthy diet, you’re fine. Happy running!
