There are 2 main prongs to treating hypertension.

Firstly, if she overweight, weight loss is important. For every kilogram of weight loss, the diastolic (top number) and systolic (bottom number) blood pressure will drop by 1mmHg.

Salt reduction in the diet is important too. The main source of salt in the diet is not what you put in your food, but what is already in it. Look at the nutrition label under sodium. Foods that have less than 120mg/100g are low in salt, foods that have more than 500mg/100g of sodium are high in sodium. Food like cornflakes are surprisingly high in salt. You are better off buying salt reduced foods and adding your own salt to taste. This way it will taste salty, but you will be getting far less sodium over all.

The DASH diet for hypertension is worth a look. Is is not a traditional low sodium diet, it is high in the mineral potassium, calcium and magnesium which can help lower blood pressure. It is also low fiber and low fat so will help worth weight loss. It was developed by the US department of Health and Human Services. Speak to your doctor about it or get a referral to a dietitian.

There is a diet called the DASH diet. Studies have confirmed it’s effectiveness. It’s a place to start for ideas anyway.

"Recommended by the American Heart Association and the National Cancer Institute, the DASH diet is an overall eating plan that focuses on what people should eat, rather than what not to eat."
